Conversation I just had with E this morning:
E: Mommy, I just had a nice dream.
Me: Great, sweetie. What was the dream about?
E: A wedding.
Me: A wedding? Really? Whose wedding?
E: My wedding.
Me: Oh? Were you marrying Prince Charming?
E: No. Jasmine. [Nod head. Save speech about how she can love whoever she wants for another day.]
Me: Wow, sweetheart. It sounds nice.
E: We had lollipops. And rainbows. And fruit snacks.
Me: Was mommy there?
E: No. Daddy. [Great. Missed my own daughter’s pretend Princess wedding!]
Me: Daddy loves you.
E: And a swordfish.
Me: Oh. Ahh… was it a nice swordfish?
E: Yes. I like swordfish. [I’m sensing a downturn in the conversation coming soon.]
Me: Great.
E: And jellyfish.
Me: Oh. Was it a nice jellyfish?
E: Mommy! Jellyfish aren’t nice. They have thing-ies and squiggle. [starts waving arms around.]
And conversations pretty much falls apart right there.
But if you’re ever wondering what a 4-year old dreams about, it’s a lovely underwater sea wedding to Jasmine with the best fruit snack caterer around. And it is a lovely dream.
